Wellspring of the Gospel

Year C: Pentecost Sunday

Second Reading: Romans 8: 8- 17

Though we often feel that the separation between the spiritual and material has never been greater, there have been very stages in history when people have tended to focus on one or the other. In these days of the internet and, in the developed world, mass advertising and an abundance of wealth and material possessions, it is perhaps more all-pervading - harder to escape.

Our Second Reading helps us to remember that, although the conflict between the spiritual and unspiritual seems more intense these days, it is not new. The people in Ancient Rome must also have been facing similar challenges and the temptations of worldly success would have been every bit as strong as they are in our day. For recently-converted people, that temptation may have been even stronger. How did they know that this new way of life was worth all the sacrifices they were having to make. Would it not just be easier to live the familiar life - take up with the old company - enjoy life in the taverns and games?

Paul's words are, therefore, somewhat bracing. Yes, there is a conflict but they - and we  - have been filled and justified by the Spirit. This is a life-changing event and we are no longer to be subject to the whims and vagaries of the unspiritual life.

The Spirit of God does not enslave us as some of the worldly pleasures do -it is a Spirit that liberates us - gives us permission to stand in the presence of God as his children - and not only as children but as heirs - co-heirs with Christ. What greater dignity could we have? And, having that dignity, why are we tempted by what is passing and ultimately unsatisfying?

As we pass from the glorious Season of Easter and look ahead to Ordinary Time, Paul's words deserve a place in our hearts. Do not forget the glory you have experienced and which you are promised... Live as children of God with a spiritual destiny that far surpasses anything the world can give.

What does it mean for me?

Waterlily What unspiritual things tempt you?

How can you set your sights on the spiritual and the destiny that awaits you?
