"When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.  "

Acts 2: 1-4 (NRSV)

Many pictures of the Coming of the Holy Spirit show flames on the heads of all the disciples but none above Mary for, of course, the Spirit had overshadowed her already at the conception of Jesus. It is this Spirit that gave the disciples the confidence to begin the mission of the Church - to proclaim the Good News to the ends of the earth.

The Holy Spirit comes upon us in baptism and confirmation and brings us the gifts we need to fulfil our role in building up the Kingdom. How these are distributed is according to the will of the Spirit but each is given to complement those of others. The Church is strong when the gifts of all are used for its greater good - and for the up-building of the Kingdom. Courage, wisdom, understanding and good counsel are just three of the gifts with which we can change the world.

Pray for the generous use of the gifts of the Spirit.

     Mary, Spirit-filled Mother of God,
the abundant gifts of the Spirit founded the Church,
     inspiring the first disciples
to pour onto the streets to share the joy of the Good News.
     Pray for their successors
that they will use their own gifts
     with joy and commitment
to enfold the world with the love of the Church.
