Wellspring of Scripture

Today’s Reading records one of many clashes the apostles had with the Jewish authorities.

From being so afraid that they hid away behind closed doors, the apostles are now out in the streets, in the Temple, speaking of Jesus and, worse, the blame attached to the authorities for His death.

In reply, Peter speaks out, saying that, if it comes to a choice, obedience to God comes before obedience to men.

It was God who raised Jesus to life - and men who had condemned Him to the death of a slave - a non-person.

As witnesses to this - and filled with  the Holy Spirit - the apostles cannot do anything other than tell the world about it.

As is often the case, it is useful to read the bits that have been left out. There had been a discussion between the council members where previous “Messiah-movements” were brought up. After the executions of most “Messiahs” their followers dispersed. The suggestion is to “wait and see” - if the undertaking is of human origin, it will collapse - if it is of God, then nothing will be able to stand in its way. It turns out that the warning to speak no more in he name of Jesus came with a flogging - and yet, their determination was undiminished - if anything it was stronger.

What does this mean for us - in our day?

There are many issues facing the world where laws say that  certain things are permissible - and yet, they are destructive of life and human freedom.

As Christians, filled with the Holy Spirit, we cannot  sit back

and allow abuses of human life and dignity to take place.

This is not to advocate mass civil disobedience - but to remind us that, even in Eastleigh and Fair Oak, we can be faced with tough choices about truth and justice.

We may not take to the streets but there are many ways in which we can speak our Truth.

For us as Christians, even today: Obedience to God comes before obedience to men.

What does it mean for me?

Have you ever been faced with a choice between obedience to God and obedience to men or women?

What was your choice - and what were the consequences?
