Rublev's Icon of Hospitality The Hospitality of God

As well as being an icon of the Trinity, Rublev's Icon of Hospitality offers a beautiful image of the hospitality of God. If possible, have a copy of it available - either as a poster or individual cards.

Opening Responses

Reader

Lord God, Creator of all;
you created us to be your People;
a people free to love and to serve you
with all our minds, with all our hearts and with all our strength.

ALL

SO WE COME TO WORSHIP OUR GOD,
LEAVING BEHIND ALL THAT BINDS US:
OUR DOUBTS AND OUR FEARS;
OUR DARKNESS AND OUR HOPELESSNESS.

Reader

Lord Jesus Christ, Saviour of all:
you came as a child,
gathered into the loving embrace of a family.
As an adult, you shared love, laughter and tears
with those whom you knew as friends
and the love of the Father
with all who would receive it.

ALL

SO WE COME
TO LOVE AND TO HONOUR YOU,
CELEBRATING THE COMPANIONSHIP
OF THOSE YOU HAVE CALLED TO BE YOUR DISCIPLES.

Reader

Gracious Spirit, Inspirer of all;
brooding over us gathered here;
eternally breathing Life into all of creation;
endlessly giving, endlessly comforting.

ALL

SO WE COME
TO BE STILL IN YOUR PRESENCE;
TO HEAR IN THE SILENCE
THE WHISPER OF GOD
BREATHING LIFE INTO OUR SOULS;
DEEPENING OUR UNITY IN THE VERY LIFE OF GOD.

Closing Responses

Reader The God of all Creation called us into being:
ALL

AND OUR GOD,
THE GOD OF ALL CREATION SAID:
BEFORE I FORMED YOU IN THE WOMB,
I KNEW YOU
AND CALLED YOU TO BE MINE.

Reader

Jesus Christ, God's new creation,
called us to be His disciples and His friends:

ALL

AND JESUS SAID:
YOU DID NOT CHOOSE ME,
NO, I CHOSE YOU;
AND I COMMISSIONED YOU
TO GO OUT AND TO BEAR FRUIT,
FRUIT THAT WILL LAST.

Reader

The Spirit of God, the Creative Breath of God,
calls us to be made new:

ALL

FOR IF ANYONE IS IN CHRIST,
THERE IS A NEW CREATION:
EVERYTHING OLD HAS PASSED AWAY;
SEE EVERYTHING OLD HAS BECOME NEW.

Reader

The God of all Creation has planted in us seeds of new life
and calls us to nurture and nourish them,
to train them and prune them
and make them fruitful for the glory of His Name:

ALL

SO LET OUR LIVES BE LIVED IN FRUITFULNESS;
THE FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD:
OF PEACE AND PATIENCE;
OF KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY;
OF FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS AND SELF-CONTROL.
AND MAY THE ABIDING FRUIT OF OUR LIVES
BE BORNE IN ENDURING LOVE AND ETERNAL JOY.
AMEN.
