Second Sunday of Easter

First Reading: Acts 4: 32-35

The First Readings between now and Pentecost follow the pattern set for Eastertime in the three year cycle - looking at the book of the Acts of the Apostles.

This is the epic story of how a group of fishermen, tax collectors, and tent-makers took the Good News of the Resurrection far beyond the villages which had been their homes - out into a Gentile and, often, pagan world.

Our reading today, reminds us of the time when the group of believers was just beginning to establish itself. The initial excitement of Pentecost was past and the group were settling into a life of witness in Jerusalem. After the dramatic speech of Peter, the witness here seems fairly calm and unobtrusive - but it was nonetheless effective.

They are described as a community living in mutual care and concern - providing for each other - being united in heart and soul.

From this quiet and orderly community, the apostles continue to witness with great power - drawing from the strength and support of the community to continue to proclaim the death and resurrection of Jesus.

It is easy to underestimate the power of our everyday witness to our Risen Lord. People remember powerful speeches by evangelists - and some turn their lives over to Jesus at large rallies. However, unless the new Christian has a community in which to grow and mature, their faith can often be short-lived. They cannot put down the roots necessary to maintain and develop their faith.

A community of love and mutual concern provides both the welcome and example needed by new (and established!) Christians. It also forms the seedbed for the apostles of the future who are sustained in their own ministry by the quiet fidelity of the home community to theirs.

What does this mean for me?

How can your everyday life witness to the truth of Jesus' life, death and resurrection?

How can you support those who are present-day apostles?
